He will cover all aspects of how this watch works. Tools used in the repair of the watch will be discussed through out as well as technical documents useful in the repair. More advanced repair procedures such as replacing the balance staff, common sense adjustments to the escapement, and regulating the time keeping will also be discussed. Marty Cohen (scheduled for April 2015, but postponed to now) will share his thoughts and observations about how our view of time has changed as the accuracy of our ability to measure it has improved. Marty Cohen is a retired engineering consultant. His many interests include horology, anthropology, history, mathematics, banjos and making things. The major product from his woodworking activities is sawdust.
12:00 Noon. Lunch and Annual Chapter Business Discussion
1:00 PM. "The Employee's Own Watch." This talk by Tom McIntyre focuses on the practice at Waltham that encouraged the employees to develop their skills by purchasing material at cost and making their own watches. This practice was in place from the very beginning in the 1850's, and this talk features an especially interesting example from the late 1880s. Tom started collecting clocks and watches in Canada in 1967 and joined the NAWCC in 1971 after moving back to the states. After moving to Massachusetts in 1978, he stumbled across some very nice Waltham watches on a trip to London and has been working on his Waltham collection since that time. Tom is the technical administrator for the NAWCC Message Board.
