Acting President’s Message
The Passing of David Deutermann (1933 - 2015)

Our organization operates through the efforts of only a few people. Dave was one of those people. Dave passed away Wednesday, September 23rd, as the result of complications from surgery. A friend described him as a "really kind and gentle man."

Dave joined the chapter about fifteen years ago. At his first meeting he responded to our request for people to help run our chapter - a request we make quite often with generally no response. Dave volunteered and it was the beginning of a long friendship with the chapter. Along with many other activities, he served as president twice. Whenever there was need for a job to be done Dave was there.

He was a graduate of the Naval Academy - one of four Deutermanns' who graduated from the USNA. Dave graduated in 1956 and served in the navy for twelve years in submarines and a destroyer. When he returned to civilian life he worked in the electric tool and home appliance industries for several years before retiring to Lakeville, MA. At this time he began a repair and restoration of antique clocks business. He was also a collector of antique clocks, specializing in Connecticut shelf clocks.

Dave was quite thoughtful and generous. If he learned you were interested in a particular subject and he had information you might use, you can bet he would have it for you at the next meeting. We have been lucky to have had him active with our chapter for the last fifteen years and his presence will be missed.

WORKSHOPS AND PROGRAMS

9:45 AM. "Waltham Model 1899/1908, Ab Ovo Usque Ad Mala, Session 1 of 2." Our well-known council officer, Chris Carey, will focus this presentation for those who are interested in learning the repair of an antique pocket watch. He will cover all aspects of how this watch works. Tools used in the repair of the watch will be discussed through out as well as technical documents useful in the repair. More advanced repair procedures such as replacing the balance staff, common sense adjustments to the escapement, and regulating the time keeping will also be discussed. Chris learned the trade from his grandfather, Pasquale "Pat" Caruso who was a watchmaker at Waltham Watch Company for more than 40 years. Since 1993, Chris has owned and operated the Watertown Watch and Clock. He is an officer of Chapter 8, an officer of The Massachusetts Watchmakers-Clockmakers Association, The American Watchmakers-Clockmakers Institute, and the Greater Boston Watch and Clock Collectors.

10:45 AM. "Waltham Model 1899/1908, Ab Ovo Usque Ad Mala, Session 1 of 2." This session is a continuation of the first session.

12:00 Noon. Lunch

12:45 PM. "Unusual American Pillar & Scroll Clocks - Variants and Deviations." This presentation by our equally well-known, Peter Nunes, will look at the ubiquitous pillar & scroll clock, probably one of the finest clock designs marking the apex of American wooden movement shelf clock case making. They are, in addition, the very first affordable American shelf clock and, as such, revolutionized the American clock industry. This presentation will illustrate several interesting variations on the pillar and scroll theme. Some of these are very early, or high style, top end variants - others, simplified and cheapened - but they all illustrate the astounding variety to be found among American pillar and scroll clocks. Peter joined NAWCC in 1971, and has served as president of Chapter 8, as well as chairman of Cog Counters. He is a former president of the American Clock & Watch Museum, in Bristol, Connecticut. He maintains a clock restoration shop in Peace Dale, Rhode Island, and specializes in wooden movement repair.
