WORKSHOPS AND PROGRAMS

9:45 AM. "The Construction of Two Wooden Works Movements and a Tallcase Case." Dave Warren's substantive construction of these three pieces began by trial and error. Ultimately, the designs were changed to suit his tastes and goals. The results have been rewarding, and more projects are planned for the future. A complete description of the development process and changes to the original design will be made. Dave, while holding a position as a public safety officer at a local college, obtained his Bachelors and Masters degrees. He joined NAWCC and Chapter 8 in 2005, and currently focuses on cuckoo clock repair. Dave’s experience of being a woodworker for many years helped to extend his interest into building wooden clocks.

10:45 AM. "Aaron Dennison and His Orphaned Watches." Tom McIntyre's presentation will cover watches that descended and evolved from the Tremont Watch Co. after Dennison's move to England. David Penney and Tom have been working on this material for some time now, and this will be an early presentation seeking thoughts and feedback from the audience. Tom has been collecting watches and clocks since 1967, and has been a member of the NAWCC since 1971. He has been heavily involved in developing Internet facilities and services for the NAWCC, and is currently the technical administrator for the NAWCC Message Board and provides software support for the Headquarters staff.

12:00 Noon. Lunch

12:45 PM. "Brass Dials." Don Irving's presentation will cover the methods and materials that were used to build brass dials in the 18th century and the evolution of their style. Also, there will be a discussion on how to identify dials that have been "tinkered with" to make them look old or authentic. Don has been repairing clocks for many years, and building clock cases for about 20 years. He has taken classes at the School of Horology as well as at the North Bennett Street School in Boston. Don has previously given presentations to Chapter 8 about moon dials as well as clock case construction. He is the founder and President of Data Guide Cable Corp, and lives in Westminster, MA.
