WORKSHOPS AND PROGRAMS

9:45 AM. "Scoundrels & Scandals: Early 19th Century Connecticut Clockmakers & the Law." Mary Jane Dapkus will present the results of one of her newest horological researches. During the industry's heyday, Connecticut clockmakers' lives were shaped not only by the state's Puritan origins, but also by an archaic legal system that mirrored English common law. Join speaker Mary Jane Dapkus to hear some of their stories that never made it into the local histories and family genealogies, yet contribute much to an understanding of their work. For the past nine years she has served on the NAWCC's Research Committee, and also, briefly, as curator of the American Clock & Watch Museum. Mary Jane is a member of Chapter 8, Chapter 194 (Cog Counters'), and serves as secretary of Chapter 148 (CT).

10:45 AM. "Charles E. DeLong, America's Greatest Watchmaker." Tom McIntyre has long been interested in Charles DeLong, and has been studying his career for more than 30 years. DeLong was one of those rare persons who could create a new tool for a new job as well as improving upon existing watch technologies. Tom is currently completing his 3rd term on the NAWCC Board of directors, which began in 2003 when he won the election for 2nd Vice President. He has been collecting watches and clocks since 1967 and has been a member of the NAWCC since 1971. Tom has been heavily involved in developing Internet facilities and services for the NAWCC, and is currently the technical administrator for the NAWCC Message Board and provides software support for the Headquarters staff.

12:00 Noon. Luncheon

12:45 PM. "Hidden Treasures - Important, Inexpensive, and Rare Clocks Ready to be Found." Tom Grimshaw will present images and examples of items he has recently purchased that are important to horology, inexpensive, and rare. And all are just waiting to be found. Tom is an engineering graduate of the Univ. of Michigan. He is well known to our membership as having been published in the Bulletin, and has given hundreds of presentations at chapter and regional meetings and National conferences through the years. Tom is a former president of Chapter 55, and current president of the ACWM in Bristol, CT..
