WORKSHOPS AND PROGRAMS

9:45 AM. "Assembling and Setting Up the French Clock Movement." John Losch, well known to most of us, will demonstrate how to use the punch marks on wheels and markings on pinions to successfully get everything in sync for proper striking. With this information the plates on the movement will not have to spread apart after initial assembly to reset wheel positions. Also, he will decode the numbers on the backplate that relate to the pendulum configuration. John Losch is a retired clockmaker living in Holliston, MA.

10:45 AM. "Looking at Ratchets, Clicks / Springs, Main Spring Winding, and Repairs." Steve Sanborn, another person well known to us, will delve into the world of reliable click and ratchet operation, the numerous causes of failure of these components, and how to service a mainspring. After obtaining a business degree and working in the banking sector for a number of years, Steve and his wife opened a clock restoration service in Sunapee, NH. He has been active in the NAWCC since 1959, and was named an Old Timer in 2001. Also, Steve is a past President of Chapter 8.

12:00 Noon. Luncheon

12:45 PM. "James Arthur, Forgotten Legacy." Bob Frishman will talk about the rare James Arthur collection of watches, clocks, and horological papers. James Arthur was, perhaps, one of the foremost collectors of horologica and amassed a collection of over 2,000 watches and clocks. We will learn about the shabby treatment of his collection at New York University and the ultimate status of these artifacts. Bob Frishman is a Chapter 8 past-president and has made several presentations to our chapter. He has repaired, sold and studied antique timekeepers since 1980. His business, Bell-Time Clocks, is based in Andover, Mass. Bob's articles appear frequently in the Bulletin, and he lectures regularly on many aspects of horology.
