9:00 AM. “Balance Wheel Escapements in Watches and Clocks." This power point presentation, by Chris Carey, will mainly cover the detached lever escapement frequently found in pocket watches, wrist watches, carriage clocks, and Chelsea, Waltham and Howard steam room and nautical clocks. He will cover how the escapement works, how it is handled, and how it is repaired. Chris is the owner of Watertown Watch and Clock Company in Newton, MA specializing in the repair of vintage and antique watches and clocks for more than 17 years. He is the President of The Massachusetts Watchmakers-Clockmakers Association, a member of AWCI, NAWCC, and The Greater Boston Watch and Clock Collectors.
10:30 AM. “Maine's Oldest Tower Clocks.” Mark Beever’s presentation will provide a visual tour of the state with brief histories and descriptions of the oldest tower clocks in Maine. Mark has a number of early slides taken by late Chapter 89 member Carroll Morse, and will provide updates on the current condition of most of these clocks. He will also have some information on the buildings that house them, the bells they strike, and the makers of these early clocks. Mark is a veterinarian who lives in Cornish, Maine. He has an active interest in clock repair and restoration, and joined the NAWCC in 1999. As a Chapter 89 member, Mark has been a part of the Tower Clock Committee and has been working on updating the Chapter's database project on all of the Maine tower clocks.
12:45 PM, Luncheon Program. “The History and Reproduction of George Hatch Keyhole Clocks.” Russ Khederian and John Cherkerzian will give a presentation about their decision to produce, and the actual production, of ten exact reproduction George Hatch keyhole clocks. Additionally, John’s wife, Mary, will talk about the faux graining that she did on all of the cases. They will have an original Hatch clock as well as one of their reproduction clocks on-hand. Both Russ and John have strong connections to the reproduction of clocks. Russ’s father, Myron, joined E. Howard & Co. after WWII and, during the mid-1970s, worked with Dana Blackwell and Bob Keenan to develop their line of reproduction clocks. Also, John worked at the Charles Street, Waltham, location during the late 1960s to the early 1970s. Russ is now a CPA. John’s father, and John, did the case finishing on the E. Howard black walnut figure 8 No. 10 clocks. John is a dentist and a skilled, avid woodworker.
