Directions:
From the East or West: Mass Turnpike (I-90), take Exit 10, then stay to the right after exiting the toll plaza and to Southbridge St. (Route 12) going south. The Elks Club is about 0.6 mile on the right.
From the North: follow Route 290 to Exit 6, then to Route 20 West. Follow Route 20 to the 4th set of lights (Route 12 intersection). Turn right (north) on to Route 12. The Elk Club is about 0.3 mile on the left. Note: the exit for Route 20 West off of Route 290 is the very first exit after the Mass Turnpike. The exit comes up quickly, so be aware of this situation.
From the South: follow Route 395 (becomes Route 290 in Auburn) and take Exit 6 for Route 20 West. Proceed to the 4th set of lights (the junction of Routes 12 and 20) and turn right on to Route 12 North. The Elks Club is about 0.3 mile on the left.

I am pleased and honored to have been chosen President of Chapter 8, and extend my sincere thanks to Larry Chelmow for his last two years of dedicated service as our President. During my three years as Program Chair, I was fortunate to meet many talented people, most of whom, with little arm-twisting, graced us with workshop and luncheon presentations. I am amazed at the depth of knowledge, the willingness to help, and the sound teaching skills of these presenters, and was thereby reminded of just how fortunate we are to live in New England, where this talent and enthusiasm seems to be in abundance. Joe Seremeth has now taken over the Program Chair job, and is working hard to continue Chapter 8’s vigorous educational efforts. Please do not hesitate to share any ideas for programs that you might have with him. While concerns over declining membership in NAWCC, both nationally and locally, continue, I am happy to report that Chapter 8 remains strong, with a stable membership of around 500 for the past several years, well attended meetings, and a good number of tables at the Marts. In addition, we are in sound financial condition. Our dedicated Council members continue to make every effort to keep the costs associated with meetings as low as possible, both for table holders and attendees, and I think they have admirably succeeded in these trying times. | 9:00 AM | "Clock and Watch Repair - Getting Started" - Roger Hessel will discuss the learning process to become skilled in clock and/or watch repairs by utilizing mentors, individual studies, gaining experience with practice, and the resources available from our horological associations. Roger graduated from the School of Clock Repair & Restoration, and apprenticed with Norman McKenzie from 1988 to 1995. His horological memberships have included the AWI, NAWCC, Chapter 8, and the Boston Clock Club. Roger has degrees in both mechanical engineering and civil engineering, and is a special investigator for an insurance company. |
| 10:30 AM | "An Overview of Lathes" - John Losch will give an overview of lathes used in horology, drawing upon his considerable lathe skills. The presentation will range from the common watchmaker’s lathe to the basic traditional “engine” or screw-cutting lathe. Mixed in will be some early (some still available) horological lathes, along with views of some of the affordable modern mini-lathes and engine lathes available right now. The discussion will cover the types of work each lathe is best suited to do, what tooling is needed at a minimum, and how to maintain lathes. Finally, there will be some pointers on what to look for when buying a used lathe. John Losch is a retired clockmaker living in Holliston, MA. |

| 12:45 | Luncheon Program: "Wooden Movements" - Snowden Taylor, well known to our membership, will give a presentation about a variety of wooden movements and some distinguishing characteristics. Snowden is a retired research and teaching physicist. He joined the NAWCC in 1965, has been the Chair of the Research Committee since 1981, and has written extensively for the Bulletin. Snowden is a former President of the American Clock and Watch Museum, and is now an honorary Director. |
The Silent Auction table (8: 30 to 10:15) - enables you to sell a few items without the need for a table:
Fill out a slip at the table with your minimum price you will accept for the item. Members can then write in their bids during the course of the auction. The cost to you as a seller is only $3.00 PER ITEM. The charge is payable in advance and applies whether item sells or not (multiple items for one bid count as one item).

At at the auction table you can buy a ticket for the 50-50 raffle.
