Directions:

From the East or West: Mass Turnpike (I-90), take Exit 10, then stay to the right after exiting the toll plaza and to Southbridge St. (Route 12) going south. The Elks Club is about 0.6 mile on the right.

From the North: follow Route 290 to Exit 6, then to Route 20 West. Follow Route 20 to the 4th set of lights (Route 12 intersection). Turn right (north) on to Route 12. The Elk Club is about 0.3 mile on the left. Note: the exit for Route 20 West off of Route 290 is the very first exit after the Mass Turnpike. The exit comes up quickly, so be aware of this situation.

From the South: follow Route 395 (becomes Route 290 in Auburn) and take Exit 6 for Route 20 West. Proceed to the 4th set of lights (the junction of Routes 12 and 20) and turn right on to Route 12 North. The Elks Club is about 0.3 mile on the left.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

It is with great sadness that I report the passing of Bob Merrill. Bob was an active member of Chapter 8, held many offices, and was a past president. He was liked and respected by all who knew him and will be missed. Also, Girard Kevorkian passed away in March. He was known to the membership for his reproduction of acorn clocks. Our condolences to the families of these two members.

Auburn appears to be a well liked meeting place. Attendance is good, food is fine, and we are able to pass on a savings to mart exhibitors. Our current plan is to use both Sturbridge and Auburn as our meeting places.

Our current membership is a little over 500 and our membership chairman, Steve Chatlas, reports we have 45 new members. Any member with a friend or acquaintance interested in clocks and watches should try to sign them up.

I am writing this several days before the Willard workshop, so my next comments are somewhat timely. Take advantage of our special programs. If you miss the workshop, you can still take advantage of the combined chapter picnic in August and our fall symposium.

9:00 AM "Watch and Clock Dial Restorations Using Dry Transfer Materials" - Jon Weber will discuss and show dial restorations using dry transfer materials. A dry transfer is similar to a decal but without the use of water and has the benefit of being reversible. It is useful to anyone who wants to repair a dial, get a dial repaired, and recognize when such a repair has been done.

Jon is a former Vice President of chapter 88 and program chairmen. He has published three articles in the NAWCC bulletin, including one on the subject of this talk. His interest is primarily precision watches, starting with US railroad watches and evolving towards higher precision timekeepers with observatory certifications. Jon works currently as an engineer at a defense firm and, in that area, has four awarded patents pertaining to infrared devices.
10:30 AM "Two-Part Presentation: Restoration of a Joseph Ives Wagon Spring Clock and Gear Repairing with a Milling Machine" - Bob Boyd will start with the restoration of a Joseph Ives Brooklyn wagon spring clock that he purchased at a recent Schmitt auction. The repairs ranged from components of the movement to casting a new bezel molded from another Ives clock bezel to achieve authenticity. The second part of the presentation will focus on the use of a Prezi milling machine paired with a Peerless lathe to carry out clock gear repairs.

Bob is a retired professional engineer who specialized in the manufacture of electronic and mechanical systems with applications as diverse as elevator controls to medical testing devices.  His goal in clock restoration is to return the piece to the condition that the maker intended.

"Patti Clocks from Welch & Spring Co. " - Andy Derven will discuss Solomon Spring and his two new case design patents in 1880 for a new line of shelf clocks that the company decided to name after opera singers. The first clock was named after "Adelina Patti," so the clock line was nicknamed "Patti" company. The firm was marketing this upscale clock at three times the cost of conventional shelf clocks of the era and was only marginally successful selling them. As a result, today Patti clocks are only found in limited numbers and some models bring high prices.

The speaker joined the NAWCC in 1997 and found clock collecting fascinating. He has found researching the histories of different makers and companies as challenging as collecting. His principal collecting interest is weight-driven clocks from late 19th and early 20th Centuries. He supports his clock addiction by working as a chemist for DuPont Performance Coatings.

The Silent Auction table (8: 30 to 10:15) - enables you to sell a few items without the need for a table:

Fill out a slip at the table with your minimum price you will accept for the item. Members can then write in their bids during the course of the auction.

The cost to you as a seller is only $3.00 PER ITEM. The charge is payable in advance and applies whether item sells or not (multiple items for one bid count as one item).

At at the auction table you can buy a ticket for the 50-50 raffle.
