About 75 members attended our annual tailgate mart and picnic at Wilbraham and Monson Academy in Wilbraham, MA.
There were about 20 door prizes handed out just prior to the buffet lunch.
The first part of the program was given by Wilbraham's own Jeff Wood, and it concerned the ongoing restoration of the Academy's 1871 E. Howard tower clock. Following a brief review of his 1993 restoration of the movement, Jeff went on to explain the current phase of the work which consists of replacing the clock's four dials. On display was one of the completed dials, awaiting only the addition of a custom-made round molding. For the first time in its 135-year history, the clock will be getting dials actually designed by its maker and featuring gold-leafed Roman numerals and dots on a black smalted background. Also displayed was a set of laser-cut hands made by Chuck Roeser and finished in gold leaf.

Several items were brought to the Show and Tell part of the program. An unusual and very rare, Time Check clock, made in England with a Waterbury movement, and recently acquired by Steve Chatlas of Chapter 8 was shown and demonstrated.

IF YOU BRING ITEMS TO SELL, PLEASE BRING ALONG A PLASTIC TARP OR BLANKET TO DISPLAY YOUR ITEMS, ALSO ANY TABLE YOU WISH. If you are not selling, please park in large lot by the gym.
Because the barbeque is catered by the Academy, we are asking for a registration to be mailed in as we normally do for meetings. Registration cutoff date for the picnic is Monday August 21st 2006.
The planned program is as follows:
9:00 Tailgate Mart ( indoors in case of rain)
11:00 Show & Tell Show & Tell -- Items of horological interest. No special theme.
Bring an item of interest to you for a short presentation. Make it informal-brief and fun! Also, a short slide show "Update on the Tower Clock Restoration at the Academy" By Jeff Wood. For the first time in its 135-year history, the clock will be getting dials actually designed by the company that made it, E. Howard & Co. of Boston.

Clock Tower Tour - Jeff Wood will conduct tours for those interested after the picnic. Sign up sheets available at check in table. Wear rubber soled shoes.
DIRECTIONS TO REACH THE ACADEMY
From the North:
Route I-91 South to Mass Turnpike East. Mass Turnpike to Ludlow Exit 7.Turn right onto Route 21. At first set of lights, turn right onto Chapin St. Continue straight for about 3 miles through next set of lights and until the road ends. Turn right onto Miller St and go over a bridge. At the stop sign, turn right onto Route 20. Go under the railroad overpass and pass two gas stations and the Wilbraham Fire Dept on the right. Diagonally opposite the fire station is Main St. Turn left onto Main St, to straight through the stop sign and follow 2 miles to campus.
From the South:
Route I-91 North from New Haven-Hartford to Exit 2, Forest Park/Route 83, which is the first exit after crossing into Mass from CT. Turn left at the first set of lights and at the next set of lights turn right onto Sumner Avenue. Continue on that same road (name changes from Sumner Ave to Allen St to Bicentennial Highway) for about 5 miles until you come to the end of the road. Turn left at the lights onto Cooley St (changes to Parker St) and continue until you reach the first major four-way intersection. Fleet Bank and a Pride gas station on the right corners) Turn right onto Wilbraham Rd for about 3 miles (changes to Springfield St upon entering Wilbraham). Continue straight through the next set of lights, crossing Stony Hill Rd. Pass the Wilbraham Town Hall on the right and, shortly thereafter, bear left onto Faculty St at the fork. The campus is a short distance beyond on your right.
From the East:
Mass Turnpike West to Palmer Exit 8. Turn right. At the second set of lights, turn right onto Route 20 West. Continue on Route 20 for about 4.5 miles. You will pass a river on your right and then go under a railroad overpass. You will then pass two gas stations and the Wilbraham Fire Department. Diagonally opposite the fire station is Main St. Turn left onto Main St, to straight through the stop sign and follow 2 miles to campus.
From the West:
Follow North directions from the Mass Turnpike north.
PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
I hope you are all enjoying your summer respite. Our Program Planning Committee is currently arranging for some notable guest speakers and technical presentations for the coming meetings.
In particular, I call your attention to the notice for our Symposium September 30th. This is an outstanding program of subjects and speakers at a true gem of a museum. Bob Frishman has worked hard to provide this Chapter 8 feature event. Please support it and return your registration by September 8th.
We welcome your suggestions for various topics of your horological interest and would be glad to incorporate your ideas into our future programs. I look forward to seeing you all at the Picnic.
