From Connecticut and New York, take 1-84 east to Rte 20 west in Sturbridge, through the lights to the Host Hotel on the right. From Rhode Island, take Rte 146 north to Rte 20 west in Sturbridge, through the lights to the Host Hotel on the right. This presentation covers basics of veneer work, with special attention to curved surfaces and flattening blisters, plus duplication of missing carved pieces and reproducing pieces using neoprene casting liquid. Leading the workshop is Les Tyrala, who has over 20 years of clock repair and restoration experience since completing a one year course on this subject in London in 1978. 10:30 AM Workshop: Mainsprings and suspension springs. Longtime Chapt. 8 Mart Exhibitor Frank McLean will discuss many of the issues and problems in clock repair that arise when these springs are not properly understood or correctly installed. One of Frank's favorite tools for spring work is .. the Bic lighter! Attendees are encouraged to join the discussion with their own spring problems and remedies. noon Lunch 12:45 PM Luncheon Speakers. Timex: A company and its community, 1854-1998. This talk, presented jointly by Kathleen McDermott and Carl Rosa shares its title with an excellent new book by Ms. McDermott. Beginning with the Waterbury Clock Company, then through the Ingersoll and Timex sagas and ending up with the resurrection of Timex in the post-mechanical age, our speakers will trace the history of one of America's most important horological enterprises. Kathlleen McDermott is an historian, consultant and teacher living in Boston. Carl Rosa is the Timex archivist who has overseen the Company's growing collection of historical timepieces and is Curator of the TIMEXPO Museum. Copies of the new book will be available for purchase and autographing. FALL EDUCATIONAL SYMPOSIUM September 23, Wadsworth Atheneum, Hartford Ct. Save this date! We have another great day planned at one of New England's premier museums. In addition to special horology-related guided tours by museum curators, two important morning lectures will be offered. David Wood, Curator of the Concord Museum in Concord Mass., will expand on his article featured in the May, 2000 issue of the magazine ANTIQUES concerning pre-1813 Concord clockmakers. Thomas Dennenberg, Decorative Arts Curator at the Atheneum, is a national expert on Wallace Nutting and will speak on Nutting's special work and publications on clocks. This event is co-sponsored by the Atheneum's Decorative Arts Council, providing us with the opportunity to meet other interesting and serious collectors in the Hartford area. See the next meeting notice for registration details. President's Message Well, the year is passing fast -it's almost summer again and I wonder where the time has gone. With the exception of the August picnic, we are booked into the Sturbridge Host through 2001. For a chapter as large as ours, both in size and geographical area, it makes good sense at this time to stay with a central location. Sturbridge seems to be always well attended, and is the best location we know of for most of our members as opposed to a floating location. If any member feels that they have knowledge of a better location than Sturbridge, -price, location and space, We certainly are open to change.
